<< World of Advertisement >>

One of the main reasons of advertisement is introducing unknown products of a manufacturer to the consumers, since not many people know anything about the particular product of a factory, advertisement is the only mean of informing the people about it, but this is not the whole story. Advertisement as any other business has number of tricky points, and this particular world of business is a very cruel an unfair world to consumer but, profitable to manufacturer. In fact, the manufacturers that produce products with very low quality, instead they spend a lot of time and money advertising these very low quality products by the public media. As a matter of fact advertisement is a kind of consumer brain washed and is so effective that consumers buy a product even without thinking. Beside, the aim of mass consumption, we see a lot of stereotype and gender violence in advertisements. The following site will show you one of thousand misusages the advertisements in our society.

RN # 11

Reading notes #11 Razi

In this reading we got knowledge about people and their stereo typical habits which they are known from. It describes people of two groups; Chinamen and Jews. The article talks about day to day habits of these people. Thesis in these article seemed like it was questioning the routine habits of peoples way of life, as in why they are the way they are.

Theme is clearly to be stereotypes in these articles. There are points where Chinamen are referred to as having a certain type of clothing and style of walking with their heads down. I think these articles are correct in picking out the life style of these people because a habit of lifetime cannot be made up or changed suddenly. It is not “just” a way people categorize each other but it rather informs a good amount people have done something similar or are doing it. However there are other points that have been overly taken such as the Jews being gathered in one place as huge groups and living to avoid expenses, because people actually do have room mates to cut expenses. Its similar to articles from magazines that inform us about other life styles that can be productive as well. This can lead to a discussion about what is actually stereotype and what is not. I would research stereotypes from three different countries. No uncommon words found.

Soon--

We'll be starting our research and thinking about final projects. Our librarian, Mary Thill, has created a wonderful web page of resources. You can look at the link now, or return to it later when you're doing research.

Video Assignment.

The movie I chose to talk about is called The Message. Its about how Islam was established. It talks about the whole entire history of Islam and all the hardships Muslims had to go through in order to have their own freedom of religion. This movie talks about how some people from other countries were willing to accept them and others wanted nothing to do with them all. The director even covers how many people were skeptic about the religion and what made many of the most religious people convert. Some of the most religious Muslims in those days were some of the most skeptic people. They were some of those people who wanted to kill off all of the Muslims before Islam spread any faster. This movie also shows that even more than 1400 years ago people wanted some sort of proof, something that is a strong enough argument that will make them convert. There once was a nonbeliever who came to Prophet Muhammed (peace be upon him) and told him slit the moon in half and then join it back together and then said he would believe that truly he was the messenger of God. And all the Prophet (pbuh) did was took his index finger and pointed at the moon and cut it in half, and then he also joined in back together in front of all of those people. Now recent studies show that there is a crack in the moon as if it was cut in half and then put back together. But when the people saw that they accused him of being some sort of magician. This tells us that our culture at this moment and even 14oo years ago needs reasoning, some type of proof, that what the other person is telling them is the truth, they just need a reason to believe us. This movie covers about all five of Marion Youngs five faces of oppresion. There is violence, marginalization, exploitation, cultural imperialism and most of all powerlessness. I think this movie explains the beginning of Islam very well. It also explains alot of other things, I think that if you watch this movie you will understand Islam alot better. I know I did. Even though I went to an Islamic school 9 years of my life, when i saw this movie alot of what I was taught there made alot more sense. I am attaching two youtube links, one is a link to the whole movie, its about 3 hours long but its in English and its very interesting. I guarantee you it will keep your attention throughout the whole movie. The other link is of the moon and where it was slit. You can just skip to like 1 minute into the video. ENJOY!

Video Homework by Chintan

Indian marriages usually getting done arrange. There were many factors why they were not accepting love marriages. Such as class difference, cast, religion and different society. This song is from movie “Devdas” it’s a real story that happened back in early 1900s. Devdas is a young man from a wealthy Bengali family in India in early 1900s. Paro is a young beautiful woman from middle class Bengali family belonging to the merchant caste. Devdas and Paro were childhood chums. Devdas goes to law for 13 years. When he return Paro looks forward to their childhood love blossoming into their lifelong journey together in marriage. In Indian cultural usually girl’s family have to approach boy’s parents and proposal for marriage. When Paro’s mother asked Devdas’s mother, Devdas’s mother the latter devdas’s mother insults her. Devdas’s mom said this marriage is impossible because Devdas’s family is from higher caste and financial situation. In order to demonstrate them Paro’s mother finds even richer husband for Paro. Then Paro tells Devdas to accept her, but Devdas wanted to get permission from his parents. They did not give him permission to marry her, and then Devdas wrote letter to Paro by saying that they were just friends forget about love. In this video it shows that the day that Paro is getting married he comes to see her and tells her to save their love and not to marry other guy. However, Paro did not get agree with him, and tells him that this is too late and if your parents are higher than mine too. Then finally she had to marry to other guy, and she was so sad about it. She goes to see Devdas to his home, and they both get too sad about it. This song shows that how these cast system and arrange merriages hurts young people’s loves. These kinds of problems are still happening. Most of the times parents do not accept love merriages if they have different society, class or caste. On wedding day eyes should get fill with joy, howver there are more than thousand kids in India, when they get marry they think they are done with life that day. Their eyes fill with sadness. There are some kids who suicide before their wedding day comes. There are people who are still thinking in all this caste and all, killing their children’s lives.

cultural event by sapana punjabi

My cultural event is regarding the festival of holi. The festival of holi is the festival of colors , fire and all of it.
The festival of holi is celebrated to thank the god for good harvest and it has connection with the farmers harvest. The festival of holi is quite celebrated by youngsters in india with colors . The incident quite remebered is that of Hiranyakashyapu who was demon of oldest times who won the battle against all lords . So he ordered every one to obey him and pray him. His son prahlad was a great devotee of lord narayan. He discussed this matter to his sister holika , who was given boon by lords that she would be unharmed by fire.So she took prahlad in to the fire for burning his legsand sat with him. The result is she was burned by fire inspite of the boon whereas prahlad was unharmed by fire. The conclusion is taht good always wins over evil. This is the festival of goddness and belief in god. This festival is very much celebrated in mathura, a place in india. Referance: Watch out for videoon youtube.com of holi in indian movie "MOHABBATEIN" STARRING SHAH RUKH KHAN. AISHWARYA, OTHERS. Name of song is soni soni ankheyo wali....

Okay, now I have read . . .

and checked in the most recent set of responses . . .

A reminder: if you're using our blog name to sign in and post, you need to make sure that you write your name in your posts; otherwise, I cannot give you credit.

Mehrnoosh wrote this in a recent statement: "[We need to] be more loyal to those things we believe in."

I thought that was a good discussion topic: How do we put some of our beliefs (discussed in class or thought about privately) into action?

I, for one, am always looking for a peaceful way to protest the never-ending development I see in my neighborhood. One idea I have is to hang a sign at my house that says, "We feed the rats!" in order to dissuade prospective buyers from moving here. But that won't really work . . .

P.S. I think I fixed the clock on our posts.

Response from Olivia, pt. 1

Hello everyone.

Excellent work, again.

So far, I've seen: poverty/religion issues, stereotypes, celebrity-worship culture (in more ways than one) . . . and I will keep scrolling down.

Marta linked us to a definition of "stereotyping" on urbandictionary.com. When I looked at it, I saw this (the typos are not mine):

A term used to define all people of a certain belief into a mostly negative category that may only reflect a selected few of the racial demographics. All people of all nationalities have been victims of being stereotyped, even those whom have made most of the stereotypes of other people.

Note: Most stereotypes are involuntarily lived out by a small segment of who they are made to offend. Here are a few examples of stereotypes.

1.) That all white women have flat booties.
2.) That all Jews are greedy.
3.) That all blacks are lazy, on welfare, and don't believe in marriage before child barring.
4.) That all Asians are good at math.
5.) That all Arabs are angry people that like to blow shit up.
6.) That ALL black men are hung like elephants.
7.) ALL white men are hung like squirrels.
8.) All blacks crave chicken and watermelon.
9.) All blacks are hostile and will quickly bust a cap in your ass.
10.) That all Mexicans like to drive around 15-17 deep in a small ass car.
11.) That all white people get angry when they cant get jobs and see others moving ahead.
12.) That all Asains like to eat rice and drive slow.
13. That all Irish people are drunks and eat potatoes.

I think that getting lists like this out in the open helps further our cause.

Poverty in Chicago

This video monitors the effects of poverty and addiction in American society in a city like Chicago. This video has concerned an especial layer of American society, who is unable to provide themselves with fundamental necessity of their life such as home, food, job, security. This is one of the dilemmas which involve today’s America society.
The country like the United States which always assists financially the third world countries to remove poverty and addiction from their societies, he himself has been involved in such a dispute. To solve such a social problem an organization named Pacific Garden Mission has been established with citizen financial aids. Their main goal is to provide this layer of society with fundamental necessity of life. Beside they will be directed these poor people with moral and spiritual advices to release them from their miseries.
If US government does stop these worthless wars, which impose a great economic disaster to US nation, instead considering of planning in nationwide projects, it will definitely improve the economic of its society. Undoubtedly, this will eradicate the poverty and addiction from the US society.

Among one of the most under privileged countries include South Africa. This clip does not complete the view of their South African culture but it does give us an idea about how humans are valued, thus, sort of giving us an idea of their society. It shows the health care abuse and corruption of this country. This is a very interesting society where people get to a hospital to get some medical attention and rather find themselves in a very dark zone. The clip basically reveals incidents in the hospital that involve newborn babies disappearing from the hospital or being given to other mothers. A number of women are interviewed regarding this matter. One of them claims to have their baby being taken away for days and returned back after being breast fed from a woman that was HIV positive. I think this is beyond corruption because it takes very immoral people to commit crimes like these with innocent people. And if these acts are done by a full health care team it kind of implies the darkness that community or city or place might contain and in what state of mind these people are, some of them not all but some them.

It is the future. I say this because political figures are using technological tools to reel in voters. These voters are young and for most of them, it is their first or second time going out to vote. For example, Barack Obama has an official campiagn music video called "Yes We Can" that features Scarlett Johansson, Will I Am, and other celebrity powerhouses.
It says so much about our culture today and how we choose to obtain information. Instead of reading traditional newspapers and getting their news, Americans are opting out and getting news from television and the internet. Some have even claimed to get news from Saturday Night Live skits to make decisions on who they would like to vote for. I feel that it is a social justice issue...Americans should give themselves the benefit of the doubt and follow elections by adhearing to their beliefs and their own judgement. Let's not let Kanye West and the faulty American media decide for us!

The youtube video that i watched is tittled "Britney Fan Crying" and stars a character named Chris Crocker. This video is something that is all over youtube and the internet in general and the majority of our nation has seen this video. This truely makes me sad because what message does this video and other like say about us as a country and as a culture. It shows that the world we live in revolves around " The Rich and Famous" of our society. Today's actors/actresses, musical performers, and sports stars are the main focus of our society. Don't we have other concerns? More important things to worry about other than britney spears and her crazy insane fans? What makes me sick from this video is that Chris Crocker has thrown himself into our society's spotlight by acting crazy. This video was the start of what lead him to his own television show and made him alot of money. Why does our society applaud this behavior? This says that our culture revolves around celebrities. We have so many issues in society that people don't involve themself in but everyone keeps up on the lastest celebrity gossip. It makes me so angry.
I'm not sure if this is a social justice themed piece other than celebrities and big screen getting more attention than our nations problems.

This video shows representation of some stereotypes.
This article shows a list of some stereotypes.

Culture Document-Janette Villegas

This clip in YouTube demonstrates the issusue that Americans face today,
gas prices. As we all know the prices are incredibly high and it does not seem to get any better. This comedian attempts to amuse his audiance with this issue by saying that people ask stupid questions refering to gas prices just because he is from the Middle East. Simply because he is of the same race that terrorists are it is assumed that he knows of them. After 9-11 many Afghanistans were being harrased because of their ethnicity. We seem to stereo-type people and assume they are the same as the rest of people thier race. The comedian brings this issusue to people with humor perhaps to make it seem like less of a problem.

Cultural document post from YouTube

According to the YouTube clip I watched, our economy is headed for a recession. The housing market is in great distress. The average American is drowning in dept. This poor economic status has our banks filing for bankruptcy themselves or getting bought out by other larger banks. The value of the American dollar has dropped dramatically. All of this of course is effecting our society today. This is definitely a Social Justice issue. The gas prices, gallon of milk, and several other things are going up. Families are being kicked out of their homes because they are being foreclosed. Millions of empty houses are sitting on the market with no one able to live in them!
