RN # 11
Reading notes #11 Razi
In this reading we got knowledge about people and their stereo typical habits which they are known from. It describes people of two groups; Chinamen and Jews. The article talks about day to day habits of these people. Thesis in these article seemed like it was questioning the routine habits of peoples way of life, as in why they are the way they are.
Theme is clearly to be stereotypes in these articles. There are points where Chinamen are referred to as having a certain type of clothing and style of walking with their heads down. I think these articles are correct in picking out the life style of these people because a habit of lifetime cannot be made up or changed suddenly. It is not “just” a way people categorize each other but it rather informs a good amount people have done something similar or are doing it. However there are other points that have been overly taken such as the Jews being gathered in one place as huge groups and living to avoid expenses, because people actually do have room mates to cut expenses. Its similar to articles from magazines that inform us about other life styles that can be productive as well. This can lead to a discussion about what is actually stereotype and what is not. I would research stereotypes from three different countries. No uncommon words found.

The festival of holi is celebrated to thank the god for good harvest and it has connection with the farmers harvest. The festival of holi is quite celebrated by youngsters in india with colors . The incident quite remebered is that of Hiranyakashyapu who was demon of oldest times who won the battle against all lords . So he ordered every one to obey him and pray him. His son prahlad was a great devotee of lord narayan. He discussed this matter to his sister holika , who was given boon by lords that she would be unharmed by fire.So she took prahlad in to the fire for burning his legsand sat with him. The result is she was burned by fire inspite of the boon whereas prahlad was unharmed by fire. The conclusion is taht good always wins over evil. This is the festival of goddness and belief in god. This festival is very much celebrated in mathura, a place in india. Referance: Watch out for videoon youtube.com of holi in indian movie "MOHABBATEIN" STARRING SHAH RUKH KHAN. AISHWARYA, OTHERS. Name of song is soni soni ankheyo wali....

Okay, now I have read . . .
A reminder: if you're using our blog name to sign in and post, you need to make sure that you write your name in your posts; otherwise, I cannot give you credit.
Mehrnoosh wrote this in a recent statement: "[We need to] be more loyal to those things we believe in."
I thought that was a good discussion topic: How do we put some of our beliefs (discussed in class or thought about privately) into action?
I, for one, am always looking for a peaceful way to protest the never-ending development I see in my neighborhood. One idea I have is to hang a sign at my house that says, "We feed the rats!" in order to dissuade prospective buyers from moving here. But that won't really work . . .

P.S. I think I fixed the clock on our posts.
Response from Olivia, pt. 1
Excellent work, again.
So far, I've seen: poverty/religion issues, stereotypes, celebrity-worship culture (in more ways than one) . . . and I will keep scrolling down.
Marta linked us to a definition of "stereotyping" on urbandictionary.com. When I looked at it, I saw this (the typos are not mine):
A term used to define all people of a certain belief into a mostly negative category that may only reflect a selected few of the racial demographics. All people of all nationalities have been victims of being stereotyped, even those whom have made most of the stereotypes of other people.
Note: Most stereotypes are involuntarily lived out by a small segment of who they are made to offend. Here are a few examples of stereotypes.
1.) That all white women have flat booties.
2.) That all Jews are greedy.
3.) That all blacks are lazy, on welfare, and don't believe in marriage before child barring.
4.) That all Asians are good at math.
5.) That all Arabs are angry people that like to blow shit up.
6.) That ALL black men are hung like elephants.
7.) ALL white men are hung like squirrels.
8.) All blacks crave chicken and watermelon.
9.) All blacks are hostile and will quickly bust a cap in your ass.
10.) That all Mexicans like to drive around 15-17 deep in a small ass car.
11.) That all white people get angry when they cant get jobs and see others moving ahead.
12.) That all Asains like to eat rice and drive slow.
13. That all Irish people are drunks and eat potatoes.
I think that getting lists like this out in the open helps further our cause.

Poverty in Chicago
The country like the United States which always assists financially the third world countries to remove poverty and addiction from their societies, he himself has been involved in such a dispute. To solve such a social problem an organization named Pacific Garden Mission has been established with citizen financial aids. Their main goal is to provide this layer of society with fundamental necessity of life. Beside they will be directed these poor people with moral and spiritual advices to release them from their miseries.
If US government does stop these worthless wars, which impose a great economic disaster to US nation, instead considering of planning in nationwide projects, it will definitely improve the economic of its society. Undoubtedly, this will eradicate the poverty and addiction from the US society.

Among one of the most under privileged countries include South Africa. This clip does not complete the view of their South African culture but it does give us an idea about how humans are valued, thus, sort of giving us an idea of their society. It shows the health care abuse and corruption of this country. This is a very interesting society where people get to a hospital to get some medical attention and rather find themselves in a very dark zone. The clip basically reveals incidents in the hospital that involve newborn babies disappearing from the hospital or being given to other mothers. A number of women are interviewed regarding this matter. One of them claims to have their baby being taken away for days and returned back after being breast fed from a woman that was HIV positive. I think this is beyond corruption because it takes very immoral people to commit crimes like these with innocent people. And if these acts are done by a full health care team it kind of implies the darkness that community or city or place might contain and in what state of mind these people are, some of them not all but some them.

It says so much about our culture today and how we choose to obtain information. Instead of reading traditional newspapers and getting their news, Americans are opting out and getting news from television and the internet. Some have even claimed to get news from Saturday Night Live skits to make decisions on who they would like to vote for. I feel that it is a social justice issue...Americans should give themselves the benefit of the doubt and follow elections by adhearing to their beliefs and their own judgement. Let's not let Kanye West and the faulty American media decide for us!

I'm not sure if this is a social justice themed piece other than celebrities and big screen getting more attention than our nations problems.

gas prices. As we all know the prices are incredibly high and it does not seem to get any better. This comedian attempts to amuse his audiance with this issue by saying that people ask stupid questions refering to gas prices just because he is from the Middle East. Simply because he is of the same race that terrorists are it is assumed that he knows of them. After 9-11 many Afghanistans were being harrased because of their ethnicity. We seem to stereo-type people and assume they are the same as the rest of people thier race. The comedian brings this issusue to people with humor perhaps to make it seem like less of a problem.
