Once again, just to be sure

MONDAY, OCTOBER 6, 2008

Hi, Everyone.

So, today we had our first round of conferences and chats and the like, and now I want to follow up with you about our schedule. (Some dates have been changed.)

1. For NEXT Wednesday (the 15th), you should type up a "plan" for your Documentation project. Remember that this is NOT your research paper; it is an oral history, or a film, or a piece of art, or a website, or a series of photos THAT YOU MAKE in order to document an example of social injustice. On the schedule, it says that this has to be done Oct. 22. That's not totally true. It really has to be done by the last week of the term, but you'll also be busy with your Research Paper and other stuff. So, next Wednesday, I want a typed plan of what you will do: who you will talk to or what you will photograph (or whatever) . . . and how you will proceed.

2. Your RN 12 (based on the handout I give you during our conference) will be due Wednesday, also. The discussion leaders will be: Jazmin, Sapana, and Janette.

3. The directions for our next and final short essay, the Bridge Essay, are in the syllabus. I will also talk about during class next Wednesday. The essay will be due on Monday, October 20th.

4. These are your tasks: read the Rock the Junta handout, type a proposal, work on the Bridge Essay, work on your Documentation project.

5. You might want to review the Doc. Proj. guidelines in the syllabus, as you think and plan.

6. ON MONDAY OCT. 13: The following people will give art presentations: Evie, Jessica, Huda, Connie. Fernando and Chintan will be following up with original works (for just a moment, seriously).

7. Because we got sooo behind (my fault), there are less good discussion leadership opportunities. If you have not led a discussion yet, you have a few options: a) lead us on Oct 31, b) create a journal reading and question that you think connect to any of our themes, c) create a link and question for the blog.

8. Thanks for your patience as we reorganize and shuffle. Thanks, also, for all your work and thoughtful observations.

RN#10 .. FINALLY!

RN # 10

I believe the theses in the stories are how to survive in the world of advertisement. In Mr. Ross Relletier story that I read he states the obvious about advertisement in the business world. It’s true that advertisement of a product plays a big role because if the advertisement doesn’t stand out then the consumer doesn’t want it. In our society today people always strive for who has what and whose car is nicer and what brand of cloths that person is wearing and so on. On the other hand Mr. Landesfahr also makes a few comments about advertisement. He says that every advertising agency in competing the same product and trying to win the most consumers.

There isn’t many different themes in the three stories, their mostly the same. The only difference is the men have different job titles in society and try to make a living out of what they do. They all advertise their products as the best and try to sell as much as they can to consumers. They pull people into buying their products by their catchy phrases.

I believe this whole competition is true in out society today. You see many advertisements for the same product just different companies. I always think like dam why can’t we just have one freaking thing and it can all be solved, it’s just as simple as that. Of course not, there just has to be 4958349 different toothpastes, shampoos, batteries, tampons, etc. This is just the way society functions; it’s all competition, who is better than who!?

1) How did this lead to being a competitive society?

2) What brands do you prefer and why?

3) Do you agree in the whole competition in advertising?

1) Different advertisement campaigns.

2) Advertisement in different countries.

3) What products do different ethnicities buy.

There are no words that I didn’t know or any ideas that are new to me. What I did find fascinating is how economy doesn’t change at all throughout history. I guess its true when people say history repeats itself.

a personal thought...

it is a little difficult to understand all these social groups and see how they are marginalized, exploited, etc. we all agree there must be something done to help these individuals and make them better off; however, we cannot solve all these problems. as a group, a community, a population we can. as individuals we cannot solve the entire problem. nonetheless, groups, for the most part, fail. everyone knows how hard it is to work in groups. it is because there are differences among all of us. the elimination of oppression is a slow process that will not be seen in our lifetime... i wish i were less selfish and would concentrate all my time helping others. but when it's time to go back home, take the train, sleep, the only thing i can think of is myself and the people surrounding me. i like the fact that i'm not a devote activist. i like that i help people individually. i know i cannot change entire groups or people, but by changing the experience of the individuals that i encounter on a day to day basis i hope i have contributed my part to society. i don't want to be the president, the leader of a social activist group, the best person in the world, i just want to be the best person that i can be.
